The NHBA Bronco All-Stars were eliminated from district play on Friday night by St. Hedwig, 3-2. Both teams came into the game needing a victory to advance past district play into the sectionals. With their seasons on the line, both teams played their hearts out producing edge-of-your-seat excitement all the way until the final out.
Though Newport staked leads of 1-0 and 2-1, St. Hedwig came back to tie up the score at 2 in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh with two out and a runner on first, St. Hedwig’s Mike Flynn drove a walk-off double to the wall in right-center that scored St. Hedwig’s final run in a 3-2 thriller.
Pitchers Keaton Cablay and Cory Stowell kept the St. Hedwig bats at bay for most of the afternoon and were aided by some spectacular defensive support including shortstop Ryan McCulley’s two web gems in the fifth. Cory Stowell’s fifth-inning single scored Jack Rapillo putting Newport up 2-1, but that would be it for the scoring. Rapillo added two hits for Newport.
To get to Friday’s game against St. Hedwig, Newport handed the Fullerton All-Stars an 8-6 defeat on Tuesday. Blake Bauer was on base all four times he batted with three hits, a walk and two RBIs. Cablay, Steven Faulconer, Rigsby Duncan and Teddy Stuka all contributed with RBI hits. Stowell and Cablay limited Fullerton to one run over the first six innings. Though Fullerton mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, Garret Davis came in to close the game stranding the tying run on first base.
Newport finished the postseason strong, winning six of their last nine.
