A Costa Mesa man who fatally drove his Toyota Corolla into a city wall last month was drunk, according to the coroner’s toxicology report released Wednesday.
Douglas Smith, Jr., 49, had a .24 blood alcohol level, which is three times the legal limit, on June 7 when police said he sped his car head-on into a city wall off Placentia Avenue next to Costa Mesa Fire Station No. 4.
He failed to stay on the street as it curved left around Estancia High School and jumped onto the fire station driveway, across the lawn and into the wall, police said.
He was not wearing his seat belt and was killed instantly, officials said.
Witnesses reported seeing Smith speeding northbound on Placentia Avenue past other cars, and even into oncoming traffic, police said.
There were narcotics found in his system.
