Of course the system needs reform.

As it is now, fewer people are paying more for less. Our government is charged to “provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare”; how can Americans achieve “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” without their health?

If we want to remain competitive, as the global economy shifts and tightens, we need to be on a more even playing field with the rest of the world, and give our citizens the solid base of good physical and mental health.

Personally, I favor a single-payer, universal coverage system as ultimately the most efficient.

For-profit medicine simply doesn’t serve the patient. It isn’t meant to. Like the Hippocratic Oath, the system should begin with “First, do no harm.”
