UCI’s Chin, Greil done in amateur public links

NORMAN, Okla. — John Chin, who will be a senior at UC Irvine in the fall, shot a six-over 77 Tuesday in the second round of stroke play in the 84th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.

Chin, the Big West Conference Player of the Year the past two seasons, tied for 65th at 150 in stroke play and missed advancing to match play by one shot as the top 64 players moved on.

UCI’s Max Greil, who will be a junior next season, shot 79 and tied for 121st place at 157.

Nick Taylor of Canada and the University of Washington led the 155-player field in stroke play with a 6-under total of 136 after a 70 Tuesday.

Chin advanced to the match-play final last year, falling 5 and 3 to Jack Newman of Michigan State in the championship.
