Coming to America
When I retired at the end of 2007, one of the things I wanted to do was get a dog. I wasn’t sure what kind, just figured I’d know it when I saw it.
It took longer than anticipated, searching local shelters and perusing Petfinder regularly, but finally I saw him. Murphy was listed under “Wheaten Teriier” and he was being fostered by the wonderful rescue group “United Hope for Animals” (hope4animals.org), which brings abandoned dogs and cats up from Mexico and adopts them out. The minute I saw his photo, my heart melted and I knew he was the one.
Murphy was only about 8 months old, but he had a pretty rough puppyhood, living in deplorable circumstances outside Tijuana. He was severely underweight, and had both Giardia and a nasty respiratory infection; but wth a lot of TLC and good veterinary care he was soon a happy, energetic boy.
He has added so much happiness to the lives of my husband Mark and me, it’s hard to imagine how we got along without him. He loves all people and animals he meets, and wants to play with everybody. He completed his obedience school with flying colors and is now enrolled in agility classes. He loves to visit with all the neighborhood people and dogs on our daily walks. I’m looking forward to many years of happiness with my Murph!
