Local players remain

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Huntington Beach resident Eric Nguyen, the top seed in boys’ 10 singles, remains alive as the 107th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships continue this week.

Huntington Beach’s Beau Pelletier and Fountain Valley’s Austin Johnson are also still in the boys’ 10 singles draw. Ocean View High’s Katie Cecil is still alive in the girls’ 16 singles draw.

Third-seeded Maxwell Cancilla of Fountain Valley is in the boys’ 12 singles draw, as is Evan Nguyen of Huntington Beach.

Nguyen has a Round of 32 match at 12:30 p.m. today at Los Caballeros Sports Village, against Jeffrey Mah of Irvine. Round of 16 matches in the division are scheduled for Friday, with quarterfinal and semifinal matches Saturday.

No. 17-seeded Johnson will take on No. 4 Bryce Pereira of San Gabriel in a Round of 32 match at 3 p.m. today. Pelletier faces No. 9-seeded Alex Kuperstein of Palm Desert in another match.

Cecil, meanwhile, will take on Hazuki Onaga of El Segundo in a Round of 32 match Friday at 12:45 p.m. at Los Cab. A win, and the Seahawks senior-to-be could face No. 3-seeded Riko Shimizu of Ojai on Saturday.

Cecil won Monday afternoon in the Round of 32, topping Analucia Fuentes of Newhall, 7-6, 6-1. She previously outlasted Alexis Marquez of Chula Vista in a Round of 64 match, 7-5, 6-4.
