Desegregating schools and the acculturation of Latino parents will be the topics of the Huntington Beach Art Center’s program tonight as part of the city’s Diversity Month.
The program, hosted by the Centennial Committee, will feature a documentary and two speakers on the topic of “Desegregation of the Westminster School District.” This is just one of the many activities and events the city is holding to celebrate its 100-year anniversary.
The program will include a documentary about the Mendez Case that desegregated the Westminster School District and a discussion by Sandra Robbie, writer and producer of the documentary “Mendez vs. Westminster: For All the Children.” Gonzalo Mendez, the father of the students at the center of the Mendez Case, will be in attendance.
The Orange County Human Relations Commission’s Don Han will give a presentation on the acculturation of Hispanic parents at Huntington Beach High School. He will speak on one of the school’s programs that informs Latino parents about how to help their children attend college.
Zayda Garcia, executive director of the El Viento Foundation, will speak about the success of the Golden West College Scholarship program for students from Oakview Elementary School in the Ocean View School District.
The program starts at 7 p.m. at 538 Main St. Admission is free, but city officials said to arrive early to ensure a seat. For more information, call (714) 536-5577.
