Roller derby league holds breast cancer fundraiser

The Orange County Roller Girls, a roller derby league, will host its third annual Roll for a Cure this Saturday to rally support for discovering a cure for breast cancer.

The Roller Girls are teaming up again with a local nonprofit, Breast Cancer Angels, in hopes of providing support for breast cancer patients through money raised from the event’s ticket sales and raffle tickets. Tickets to the event are $12, and $2 of each ticket sold will go to the Breast Cancer Angels. There will also be a silent auction, with some of the big-ticket items including a guitar, a skateboard and a two-night stay at an Ocean View Hotel, said spokeswoman Katie Martinez.

Roller derby is a competitive sport in which one person from each team, the main scorer, must lap opposing players in order to win, Martinez confirmed.

The Breast Cancer Angels is a local nonprofit organization that provides breast cancer patients food certificates, rental help and medical co-pays.

The Roller Girls raised more than $2,000 for the organization at last year’s event and hope to raise $2,000 again this year.
