Costa Mesa police are looking for the second half of an improvising duo who they said robbed a man at a bus stop wielding a belt and a barbecue fork.
Police arrested Oscar De Jesus Cruz, 22, of Costa Mesa, Monday night after they say he and a second man approached a person at a Placentia Avenue bus stop at 1:35 a.m. Monday and demanded his sunglasses.
At first Cruz was armed with just a belt, which he hit the man with after taking his sunglasses, Sgt. Bryan Glass said. Cruz and his partner ran off and then returned — Cruz with a knife and his buddy with a two-pronged fork used for a barbecue — to steal some more, Glass said. A Costa Mesa officer patrolling the area saw the fork- and knife- and belt-wielding men in the act and was able to catch Cruz, but not the grill man, police said. Cruz pleaded not guilty to robbery and assault with a deadly weapon Tuesday.
