’Eaters All-Americans

UC Irvine senior Ben Orloff was named first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. which awarded second-team honors to UCI juniors Danny Bibona and Eric Pettis Wednesday.

Orloff, drafted in the ninth round by the Houston Astros Wednesday, hit .358 in 2009 to help UCI finish 45-15 and win the program’s first Big West Conference title. The Big West Player of the Year was named third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Bibona, named first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, was chosen in the 16th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Big West Pitcher of the Year was 12-1 with a 2.63 earned-run average in 2009. A left-hander, he struck out 108 in 106 innings, while allowing only 78 hits.

Pettis, a junior closer who was named third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, tied a school single-season record with 17 saves in 2009. The right-hander was 5-2 with a 3.86 ERA. He struck out 37 in 42 innings.

UCI’s Collins advances

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — UC Irvine junior Lauren Collins qualified Wednesday for Friday’s women’s high jump final at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas.

Collins cleared 5 feet, 9 3/4 inches to become one of 15 qualifiers to advance.
