Elements stop golfers
MURRIETA — Newport Harbor High junior Travis Russell and Corona del Mar freshman Mike Moorhead completed five and six holes, respectively, at the CIF Southern California Golf Assn. Regional Championships Wednesday morning, as lightning and hail postponed action at the SCGA Members Golf Course, Newport Harbor boys’ golf coach Scott Tarnow said.
Tarnow said the two local boys and the rest of the field plan to play the final holes on the 18-hole course today, starting at 9 a.m. Tarnow said both Russell and Moorhead are one-over par heading into today’s action.
“[Some] were in the middle of the sixth hole when officials decided to pull the golfers off the course,” Tarnow said. “The hail just came down hard. The lightning was incredible.
“They probably played for an hour. We sat there for four hours to see if things would improve, but the conditions weren’t right, so we came home.”
The top six individuals, not part of the top three teams, advance to the state championships at Poppy Hills Golf Course at Pebble Beach on June 10.
If Russell and Moorhead reach state, it will be a first for a golfer under Tarnow, in his ninth year at Newport Harbor, and Coach Mike Starkweather, in his 12th year at CdM.
