St. Joachim’s Summer Games Go Patriotic This Year
Submitted by Cornelia Fuertes
St. Joachim Catholic School in Costa Mesa had its annual ‘Summer Games’ on Friday May 29th under the motto “Patriot Games.” Every year St. Joachim Summer Games focus on a different theme and as this year in a historical presidential election year and also the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln the school honored the country’s patriotic leaders – thus “Patriot Games. “ Fundraiser and FunDay in one, students of all grades, starting with Pre-K up to the 8th grade graduating class presented little skits, songs, or dances all around this year’s theme.
Patriotic posters made by all the classes were on display all over the school while onlookers could watch the children participate in games like bingo, beach ball volleyball, Frisbee golf and hoola hoops. One special fun relay race even featured “Abraham Lincoln” competing with “Betsy Ross,” a race where one needed to be not only a good runner but also skilled in quickly putting on and taking off the costumes and handing them to the next runner to make the team win.
One of the wonderful traditions of the St. Joachim Summer Games is that the graduating eighth grade class spends its last Summer Games at St. Joachim helping the very youngest students of the school. Also this year the Pre-K and K students were just so proud to do the tug of war and obstacle course together with the eighth graders. As one mother pointed out, “It’s all about helping and contributing, which is something important for the graduating students to take along on to high school and their future.”
A raffle featuring many great prizes, among them a new Nintendo DSi, concluded this fun day together with an all American hot dog, chips and ice cream feast.
