A strong postseason showing for Huntington Beach high school baseball teams continued Tuesday, as Edison, Marina and Huntington Beach all won games to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Edison and Marina both advanced with Division I road victories. The Chargers smashed West Ranch, 13-1, while Marina got by Vista Murietta, 5-3.
In Division II, Huntington Beach edged Arlington, 3-1. But in Division IV, Ocean View’s season ended in the second round as the Seahawks lost to Downey, 3-1.
Edison senior Chris Czerniachowski was two for four with a double, home run and five runs batted in for the Sunset League champion Chargers, who will play at Dana Hills Friday in a quarterfinal game. Sophomore Eric Snyder also homered, and junior Kyle Jones was four for four with three RBIs.
Sophomore Henry Owens got the win for Edison by allowing one run on four hits. The Chargers (21-5) have now won their first two CIF games by a combined total of 24-2.
“We’re starting to play like we played at the beginning of the season,†Edison Coach Steve Lambright said. “My attitude has been take it as far as you can go.â€
Dana Hills is the third-place finisher out of the South Coast League.
“Their strength is their pitching and defense,†Lambright said. “If [pitcher] Kurt [Heyer] is on his game, I like our chances.â€
Marina won a tight game against Vista Murietta, but never trailed. The score was tied 3-3 in the sixth when senior J.J. Bacarri hit a solo home run, and the Vikings tacked on another run in the seventh on Vinny Ponce’s RBI triple
Senior Race Parmenter improved to 8-0 for the Vikings (22-6), who will play at Capistrano Valley in the quarterfinals after losing a coin flip.
“A lot of people thought we’d flopped when we lost our last three ballgames in league,†Marina Coach Paul Renfrow said. “But we had already sewn up second place, and we were without our top two pitchers [Parmenter and Paul Strong]. I wasn’t concerned about it ... We’ve only lost six games all year. We’re pleased with where we’re at.â€
The Oilers, meanwhile, continued their run by beating Arlington. Huntington Beach Coach Benji Medure said it’s the furthest his team has gone in his nine years as head coach.
Huntington Beach (17-12) plays host to Yucaipa in a quarterfinal game Friday.
“As long as you get hot at the right time, anybody can win,†Medure said. “In crucial situations, we’ve been getting the two-out hit. It’s been helping us.â€
The Oilers had a three-run rally in the fourth inning against Arlington. With two men on, a two out triple by sophomore designated hitter Jake Porter scored two. Senior Kory Kovac then singled in Porter.
On the mound, Barry Luke improved to 8-3, and fellow senior Blake Cestr got his seventh save.
For Ocean View it was a different story. The Seahawks were held to six hits and shut out against Downey until the seventh, when junior third baseman Kevin Nance had an RBI single.
Ocean View, which advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2005, finished its season 18-10.
