The Marina High boys’ golf team can go down in history after the Vikings captured the CIF Southern Section Central team divisional title May 11 at Lakewood Country Club.
It’s the first time Marina boys’ golf has won a CIF title, Coach Jim Morris said.
“It’s pretty amazing,†he said. “I knew we had a good chance.â€
As a team, Marina shot 372 and beat Mira Costa by a single stroke to claim the title. Individually, the Vikings were led by senior Jem Young (even-par 72), senior Kenny Gibo, junior Jeff Fuzzard and sophomore Kyle Frame (all shot 73), sophomore Andrew Shoup (80) and senior Mike Squillace (81).During the regular season, Marina finished third behind champion Los Alamitos and second-place Newport Harbor in the Sunset League race.
The Vikings then competed in the CIF Team finals May 14 at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara. Morris said his team placed 19th out of 21 teams, led by Fuzzard with a 77.
“It’s a tough course, and it was our guys’ first time playing it,†Morris said.
Jem Young is still alive in the CIF individuals after he shot a 74 Monday at the CIF individuals Southern Regional, held at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. He birdied the first playoff hole to advance, while Fuzzard (who also shot 74) came up just short.
Young will play again Tuesday at the boys’ Individual Championships, held at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Edison’s season ended Tuesday night in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs as the Chargers fell at Santa Barbara in four games.
Game scores were 18-25, 18-25, 25-23 and 23-25.
Dillon Auxier had 17 kills and Torey Darin added 15 for Edsion, which finished its season 17-12.
?Huntington Beach High’s season also ended as the Oilers were swept out of the Division I playoffs by second-seeded Mira Costa, 25-22, 25-13, 25-23, on the road Tuesday night.
Huntington Beach, the Sea View League co-champion with Foothill, ended its season 20-8.

TRACK AND FIELD
Fountain Valley High junior Kyle Middlebrooks qualified first in the 100 meters Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries in Mission Viejo.
Middlebrooks finished in 10.48 seconds. He also qualified third in the 200, in 21.66.
Barons senior Jeff Tran and junior Kevin Miller qualified first in the Division I pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 6 inches. Senior Krissy Knowles qualified seventh in the girls’ 100 hurdles (14.76).
The divisional finals are Saturday at Cerritos College.
?At the Division II preliminaries in Moorpark, Edison senior Hillary Hayes qualified second in both the 1600 meters (5:01.92) and the 3,200 in 10:58.90. Edison junior Matt McElroy also qualified second in both events on the boys’ side, finishing the 1600 in 4:18.58 and the 3,200 in 9:20.26.
Edison junior Sean Larson qualified fourth in the triple jump (45-0 1/2 ). Senior Aaron Birk qualified seventh in the 300 hurdles (39.34). Chargers junior Allison McCoy qualified seventh in the triple jump (36-1) and ninth in the long jump (17-3).
For Huntington Beach High, senior Allison Koressel qualified third in the pole vault (10-6). Koressel has the top girls’ mark in the state this season with a 13-1.
Oilers junior Megan Good qualified third in the discus (122-10), and Jenny Pilecki qualified fourth in the 800 in 2:19.47. Junior Mike Loschavo also qualified in the pole vault, clearing 13-9.
?At the Division IV prelims, held in Carpenteria, Brethren Christian sophomore Jessica Hodges qualified tied for second in the girls’ pole vault (8-6).
