Mesa knocked out in tight first round

COSTA MESA — Alosina Skipps was two for four and drove in two runs, but the Costa Mesa High softball team lost to Western, 3-2, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Thursday.
Alex Krohnfeldt, Sami Feinstein, Serina Jimenez each had one hit for the Mustangs (14-15).
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Idalma Cruz walked to get on base. Krohnfeldt followed with a walk and Kira Mitani was hit by a pitch, setting the table for Skipps.
The Costa Mesa sophomore catcher came up with a big two-run single to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
But Western (19-6) responded with three runs in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Krohnfeldt led off with a single. With the tying run at third, Vanessa Castro hit a line drive to right and the outfielder made a shoe-string catch to end the Mustangs’ season.
The Mustangs left 10 runners on base.
Mitani, Costa Mesa’s pitcher struck out four and walked four, allowing five hits.
