COSTA MESA — Freshman right-handed pitcher Calvin Drummond struck out 16, one shy of the school record, to help the Pirates claim the Southern California Super Regional title Sunday and advance to the four-team state championship tournament beginning Saturday in Fresno.
Drummond went the distance, allowing five hits and walking no one to improve to 9-5.
Sophomore outfielder Ryan Sheeks went five for five to lead the Pirates’ 14-hit attack.
Sophomore catcher DJ Arellano was three for four with a triple and three runs batted in for the winners (34-13).
Drummond threatened the record of 17 strikeouts, set by Ted Herrera in 1954.
Mt. San Jacinto ended its season at 35-13.

IRVINE — The host Anteaters swept their fifth straight Big West Conference Series Sunday behind a strong outing by sophomore starting pitcher Crosby Slaught.
Slaught allowed five hits and one run in seven innings to improve to 6-0, helping No. 1-ranked UCI up its record to 40-12, 20-1 in the Big West. UCI has now won 15 straight conference games.
Freshman third baseman DJ Crumlich went two for four with one run batted in and senior center fielder Eric Deragisch went two for five to pace the hosts’ 10-hit attack.
Senior catcher Sammy Donabedian had three RBIs for the winners.
Matt Dufour and Noel Avison each tossed a perfect inning of relief for UCI.
UC Davis fell to 10-40, 3-18.
