Mustangs capture first league title in 31 years

The Costa Mesa High baseball team got a little a help from its rivals to capture its first league title in 31 years Friday.

Estancia upset host Laguna Beach, 4-1, that helped Costa Mesa clinch at least a share of the Orange Coast League championship, the Mustangs’ first league title since 1978.

What’s more, the Mustangs (18-6, 9-1 in league) swept a nonleague doubleheader against Firebaugh of Lynwood Friday to break the school record for most wins in a season. They can win the league championship outright with a victory at Laguna Beach Tuesday.

“We’ll be more excited if we win one more next week,” Costa Mesa Coach Jim Kiefer said. “We’re happy with the season, but we have more work to do.”

The Breakers (14-11, 7-3) still have a shot at a share of the title if they can sweep the Mustangs next week.
