Police detain residents to ask about shooting call

Costa Mesa police and gang officers briefly surrounded a Costa Mesa home with guns and rifles drawn Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call of possible gunshots in the area.

About 3:15 p.m., residents along El Camino Drive said, a stampede of police officers swarmed the area near Monterey Avenue and began searching homes and detaining and questioning residents. Authorities believed there was a possible shooting and at least one victim.

At gunpoint, police ordered a man from the home and detained him before ordering his girlfriend out as well.

They were later released, and said they were angry at the man’s roommate, whom police questioned at length before arresting him.

Police arrested Gregory Monds, 29, on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Officials said Monds called police and said his brother had been shot. Authorities said Monds’ brother was not at the home on El Camino Drive, and when police called him, he said he was fine.
