HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior Blake Davey went four for four with a double and a home run and four runs batted in as the Newport Harbor High baseball team upset Edison, 13-5, Wednesday, knocking the Chargers out of first place in the Sunset League.

The Chargers (16-5, 9-3 in league), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, entered Wednesday tied with No. 4 Marina (10-2 in league) atop the league.

The Sailors (8-14, 4-8), who began Wednesday tied for last place, defeated Edison for the first time since joining the Sunset League in 2007.

Newport Harbor lefty Dillan Freiberg threw four innings, giving up four runs to improve to 3-3.

Kyle Cablay went three for four with two doubles and two RBIs. Cody Green went three for three with a double and a triple

Rich Lowery doubled twice and drove in one run. The Sailors recorded 11 extra-base hits

Newport Harbor has three league games left. The next one is at Edison Friday at 3:15 p.m.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Corona del Mar freshman Mike Moorhead shot a six-under-par 66 Wednesday, helping him finish with a two-day total of 11-under 133 as he claimed the individual title on the Classic Course at Mile Square Golf Course.

Moorhead was one of three Sea Kings finishing in the top six in the 32-hole event and qualifying for the CIF Southern Section individual tournament at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on May 18.

Camden Nicholson had a two-under par 70 Wednesday. He placed runner-up with a 138 total.

John Davenport shot even-par 72, finishing at 150 and in sixth place.

Josh Starnes placed ninth at 157.

Championships

LONG BEACH — Estancia High senior Ryan Knapp shot a one-under-par 71 on his way to winning the individual title at Skylinks Golf Course Wednesday.

Knapp shot a one-over 71 Monday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course and finished with even-142 total. His younger brother, Jake Knapp (71-73), a freshman, finished third just behind Laguna Beach’s Duane Hulett (73-71) after a card-off, as both shot 144 in the two-day tournament. The Knapp brothers and Hulett advance to the CIF Southern Section Individual tournament May 18, again at Skylinks.

Estancia’s Ryan Burns (77-79) finished sixth after shooting 156. Costa Mesa’s Billy Im (72-88) was eighth, as he shot 160 and Estancia’s Jordan Young (77-91) was 12th with a 168.

CHINO HILLS — Newport Harbor’s Ericson Klein shot even-par 74 Wednesday to be one of four Sailors to advance to the finals after the first day of action at Los Serranos Country Club.

Zach Eddy shot 76, while Travis Russell and Mychael Clark both carded 77 to move on to the finals for Newport Harbor. Los Alamitos John Lee leads the pack with a five-under 69.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Orange Coast League Finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Estancia seniors Ely Zaidler and Danny O’Neil won the league doubles title by defeating Laguna Beach’s Rex Miller and Ely Zaidler, 7-5, 6-4, Wednesday.

Zaidler and O’Neil, the top-seeded team, did not drop a set in the tournament.

Zaidler and O’Neil advance to the CIF Individuals.

Sunset League Finals

SEAL BEACH — Newport Harbor’s top two doubles teams advanced to today’s semifinals at Seal Beach Tennis Center after winning twice Wednesday.

Cameron Chase and Daron Arnold, the No. 1-seeded team in doubles, opened with an 8-2 in their first-round pro-set match. They then won, 6-2, 6-3, to advance and will take the No. 4 seed from Los Alamitos today at 1 p.m.

Josh Tuz and Jason Cernius, the No. 2-seeded Sailors’ duo, won their pro set 8-7 (5), and then recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory to advance.

Pacific Coast League Finals

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar High’s Ryan Peyton reached the singles title match, but lost to John Huang of University, 6-1, 6-1, Wednesday.

Peyton still qualified for the CIF Individual tournament that starts May 22. CdM’s doubles team of Parker Rhodes and Chris Damion also qualified for the CIF tournament after reaching the PCL final. They lost to the Trojans’ Matt Siow and Reo Asami, 6-3, 6-3, in the title match.

Peyton defeated teammate Shane Korber in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-2. Korber beat University’s Matt Miller, 8-3, in the third-place match.

IRVINE — Sophomore Matt Berry qualified first in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.79 seconds and 100 free in 47.38 for the Sea Kings at Irvine High Wednesday, helping him qualify for the league championships in both events.

The top eight in each event advanced to the league finals Friday at Irvine.

John Kim will be seeded first in the 100 butterfly (51.53) and the 100 breaststroke (58.25).

Jared Namba qualified second in the 100 butterfly (53.58) and third in the 100 backstroke (53.97)

Michael Liao qualified second in the 100 breaststroke (58.40) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.20).

Garrett Larson qualified second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.08) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (55.15).

Isle Anderson qualified fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:07.40) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.76).

In the 200 freestyle, Carter Taylor qualified fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.44), Hayden Leach was fifth (1:49.54) and Jim Krolopp was seventh (1:52.01).

In the 50 freestyle, Blake Terry qualified second (22.19), Ari Marks was third (22.40) and Brian Schiefer was fifth (22.64).

In the 100 freestyle, Taylor qualified fourth (49.21), Schiefer was fifth (49.63) and Leach was seventh (50.21).

In the 500 freestyle, Andrew Fisher will be seeded fourth (5:05.20) and Will Havercroft will be fifth (5:06.05).

In the 100 backstroke, Marks qualified sixth (55.19).

IRVINE — Kelsey Larson recorded the best time in the 100 backstroke event at Irvine High Tuesday, the Sea Kings’ senior finished in 1:00.26 and qualified for the league championships.

The top eight in each event qualified for the league finals on Friday.

Larson also advanced in the 200 individual medley event in 2:10.64, good for second.

CdM’s Sarah Furgatch qualified in the 200 freestyle (second, 1:55.24) and 100 breaststroke (second, 1:05.39).

Kate Berry and Heather Van Hiel advanced in the 50 freestyle, qualifying fifth (26.26) and sixth (26.29) respectively. Van Hiel also qualified in the 100 freestyle (seventh, 56.67).

Natalie Wong qualified third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.38).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Costa Mesa

LAGUNA BEACH — Mustangs senior Ryan Thompson had 10 kills and nine blocks but Mesa fell in four games, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-20 in the Orange Coast League finale Wednesday.

Jeff Dye had seven kills and two blocks for Costa Mesa (13-7, 5-3 in league), and Ben Lefebvre had 30 assists.

Costa Mesa will now wait for its first-round CIF playoff pairing.

Estancia

COSTA MESA — Junior outside hitter Tyler Sullivan recorded 20 kills, five digs and two service aces for Estancia, but Calvary Chapel won the Orange Coast League finale, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, Wednesday.

Kohl Jones had 32 assists for Estancia (4-22, 2-6 in league).

Eric Mickelson contributed eight kills, four digs and three aces.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings opened the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Orange County playoffs with a resounding win Tuesday.

Noah Molnar had six goals and one assist to lead CdM to the quarterfinals today at 5 p.m. against Mission Viejo at CdM.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Tommy Hanrahan had three assists and one goal to lead the No. 11-seeded Sailors to an upset win against the No. 6 seed in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Orange County playoffs Tuesday.

Newport Harbor will face Los Alamitos today at 5 p.m. at McAuliffe Middle School.
