PREP ROUNDUP:

The Ocean View High baseball team didn’t get discouraged, even after a 1-2 start in the defense of its Golden West League title.

Four wins later, the Seahawks are back tied for first. They outlasted Segerstrom, 8-6, Friday in a nine-inning affair.

Junior Aaron Delgado had a two-run home run and a triple for Ocean View (12-5), ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division III coaches’ poll, which is one of three teams atop league along with Orange and Westminster.

Coach Shane Borowski said Delgado, a second baseman, also made a great play in the seventh inning to keep the score tied.

Delgado led off the ninth with a single, and senior Andrew Bynum drove him in with a double to give Ocean View a 7-6 lead. The Seahawks added an insurance run on sophomore Blake Walker’s fielder’s choice.

Bynum, Kevin Mackey and Freddy Sepulveda all hit the first home runs of their career in the Seahawks’ 16-0 win over Segerstrom on April 15.

“I like how we are playing as a team, and I like our enthusiasm,” Borowski said. “These are a great bunch of kids and I hope to see them keep playing this well.”

In other baseball action:

 Edison kept winning by toppling Esperanza, 6-0, Saturday.

Kurt Heyer improved to 6-0 for the Chargers, in first in the Sunset League and ranked No. 2 in Division I. Donald Sneed had a two-run home run.

Edison played host to Fountain Valley (1-6 in league) Wednesday and is at the Barons’ field on Friday.

Edison (14-2, 7-0) then plays Marina in a key home-and-home beginning April 29, at Marina.

 Marina, ranked No. 4 in Division I, has won eight straight after the Vikings edged Fountain Valley, 2-1, on Friday. J.J. Baccari had a game to remember in Marina’s 16-4 victory two days earlier, as he clubbed four home runs.

The Vikings (16-2, 6-1) played at Newport Harbor Wednesday and host the Tars on Friday.

 The Huntington Beach High baseball team fell to 3-4 in the Sea View League after a tough, 3-2, loss to Foothill on Friday. The Oilers led most of the game but the Knights scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning.

Jon Combest hit a two-run home run for Huntington Beach.

“We are very much in the playoff race, but we need to play with a sense of urgency for the next eight games,” Coach Benji Medure said. “There isn’t any breathing room now. It is time for us to step it up.”

 Brethren Christian gave up four runs to St. Margaret’s in the seventh and fell, 7-4, Tuesday in an Academy League game.

Andy Pereira and Bobby Frisch each had RBI singles for the Warriors (3-11, 2-6).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Huntington Beach fell to Foothill, 16-6, on April 14. Senior Nate Hesse scored three goals, junior Andrew Jackson had two and junior Brandon Cyprus added one. Goalie Kevin Shepley had 16 saves.

SWIMMING

Edison High senior standout Tom Shields swam a season-best time of 47.93 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle Tuesday against Newport Harbor.

The Sailors edged out the Chargers in the Sunset League meet, however, 86.5-83.5.

Edison’s girls won easily, 125-45.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach improved to 4-1 in the Sea View League after a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 win over Woodbridge Tuesday.

Nick Siegle had six kills for the Oilers, and Robert McKinley added five.
