On April 8th Robert Stovall passed away at the age of
81. He was devoted to his wife and family, to his business,
and his life long passion for his music and golf.
Born in Peabody, Kansas in 1928 to his band leader
father, Al and mother Irene. They moved their family to
Arizona in the early forties. He helped his father build
the Royal Palms Inn when he was a student at Phoenix
College. During this time he sang on the 15 minute afternoon radio program
called the “Tea Timer’s”. He served in the U.S. Airforce just as the Korean
War drew to a close. Returning to Arizona he worked with his father mining
maganese, producing what is still today the largest stockpile in the U.S. He
met and married his wife Lois in 1953 where they raised their three daughters.
He graduated from Arizona State University in 1958 & established
an outdoor advertising company which he sold in 1975 when he moved to
Newport Beach to assist with the family motel business. During all this time
he maintained his love for his music. In the 80’s he started singing with a
group of young fine musicians called the “Main Street Maniacs. He also sang
at Bob Burns restaurant two nights a week with Don West. In his late 70’s
after recovering from major surgery Bob made a series of recordings of popular
hits of the 40’s and 50’s with his pianist, Ben DiTosti and his swing band.
They preformed several times at the Costa Mesa Hilton. Bob was a member
of the Phoenix Country Club where he was club champion in 1968 as well as
a member and golf team player at Big Canyon Country Club. His piercing
wit and sense of humor, his compassionate nature and remarkable singing
voice never left him. He is sorely missed and survived by his wife Lois,
daughters Alison Hicks, Diane and Joan Stovall, son in law Cyrus Hicks and
grandchildren, Jarod, Lauren and Chad; his brother and sister in law James
and Barbara Stovall and sister Minta Stovall, and many friends. A private
memorial service is planned. In Bob’s memory donations may be made to
the “Music Ministry” of Lutheran Church of the Master, 2900 Pacific View
Dr., Corona del Mar, CA 92625
