INDIAN WELLS — Sam Gould won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, to clinch the Anteaters’ win in the semifinals of the Big West Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Saturday.
Fabian Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4, for UCI (12-14), the No. 2 seed. The Mustangs were seeded No. 3.
Khunpol Issara, the ’Eaters’ No. 3 singles player, won, 6-2, 6-2.
UCI will face No. 4-seeded UC Santa Barbara today at 9 a.m. for the championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

INDIAN WELLS — UCI’s No. 6 singles player Heidi Kaloi clinched the team win that moved the Anteaters into today’s title match of the Big West Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Kaloi defeated Bryanna Ojeda, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. UCI’s No. 1 singles player Stephanie Hammel defeated Michelle Murphy, 6-2, 6-0. Claire Fermin and Becka Kwan also scored wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively for UCI (16-7).
UCSB’s Jill Damion, a Corona del Mar High product, beat freshman Courtney Byron, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in the No. 2 singles match.
The Anteaters will face No. 1 seed Long Beach State in the championship match at 9:00 a.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. This is the fifth time in the past eight seasons that these two schools have met in the Big West title match. LBSU has won each of the previous four.

COSTA MESA — Shortstop Beck Wheeler went four for four with four runs scored and an RBI, but the Pirates’ rally fell short in an Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.
Designated hitter Scott Stidham added three hits, two runs and three RBIs and third baseman Drew Hillman added two hits a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs for OCC (26-10, 14-4 in conference), ranked No. 1 in Southern California. Ricky Stokes was two for two with a run and two RBIs, while Josh Berryhill had a hit and two RBIs for the Pirates, who remain alone atop the conference standings after Saddleback rallied for an 11-10 win at second-place Cypress (25-12, 13-5) Saturday.

AZUSA — The Lions slugged five home runs and the No.-14-ranked Cougars had another five dingers in the first game to highlight the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.
Right fielder Derek Craddock was two for five with two RBIs and a run and left fielder Nicholas Akins was two for five with three runs and an RBI for Vanguard (16-24, 11-21) in the first game. Akins, Craddock, Keegan Freeman, Michael Anderson and Zachary Falk each had a home run.
Vanguard shortstop Brett Siegmund was two for three in the second game, while Eric Krzysiak homered.

IRVINE — The No. 9-ranked Anteaters were relegated to share the Big West Conference regular-season title after the loss to the No. 13-ranked Matadors Saturday Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Erin Kiene and Kat Plummer scored two goal each, while Ashling Taylor, a Newport Harbor High product, had one goal for UCI (20-9, 4-1), which shared the regular-season title with UC Davis and Northridge.
Freshman goalie Morgan Vickers, also of Newport Harbor, had six saves in the second half for UCI.
The Anteaters will next play in the Big West Conference tournament in Stockton Friday through April 26 at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool Complex.
The top three seeds of the tournament will be decided today by a coin toss.

COSTA MESA — The Lions’ loss in the second game proved to be Hope International’s first Golden State Athletic Conference win in a doubleheader Saturday.
In the first game, Vanguard pitcher Patricia Olvera (13-11) allowed two hits, struck out two and walked none in her shutout. Shortstop Sarah Howe tripled and second baseman April Glenn was one for for one with an RBI for the Lions (25-22, 6-14 in conference). Stephanie Leisenring and Amanda Omahen added one hit each. In the third inning, Glenn plated Omahen, who reached on a single, stole second and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt by Kasey Klarenbach.
In the second game, Hope International (12-30, 1-21) won after scoring a run in the eighth.
Olvera was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth. She moved to third on Katie Daniels’ sacrifice bunt. But Omahen flied out and Klarenbach grounded out to end the game.
Howe was two for four with one run and one RBI. Angela St. Croix was two for three with one run and one RBI. Daniels was one for three with two RBIs.
TRACK AND FIELD
Mt. SAC Relays
WALNUT — UC Irvine senior Julian Eison won the high jump at the 51st annual meet late Friday night.
Eison cleared 7 feet, 1/2 inch to tie his lifetime-best mark, which ranks No. 2 in UCI history.
MEN’S GOLF
U.S. Intercollegiate
STANFORD — UC Irvine in ninth place following the first two rounds at the Stanford University Golf Course.
UCI and UC Davis are tied for ninth with 36-hole totals of 561.
Washington leads the 17-team field at 537, USC is second at 545 and Arizona State third at 549.
Tze Huang Choo of Washington is the individual leader at 10-under-par 130 on rounds of 65-65 on the par-70 course.
UCI senior Sean Shahi is in fourth place at five-under 135 (69-66) and junior John Chin is ninth at four-under 136 (69-67).
The final round is scheduled for today.
