Assemblyman Chuck DeVore’s on a mission. He’s just begging to be sued by Eagles rocker Don Henley.
Has he lost his mind? Who wants to get sued?
No, DeVore’s just being clever. He feels he’s on solid legal ground using Henley’s song “The Boys of Summer” to satirize President Obama, and he will fight Henley’s attempts to pull the video from YouTube, even if it ends up in the courts. It’ll be there where DeVore will have him just where he wants him — in the national spotlight as a 1st Amendment crusader who also just happens to be running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Barbara Boxer.
Let’s face it: DeVore’s popular here at home, but he has a big job introducing himself to the rest of this huge, sprawling state, and a national controversy against a famous rocker would get him a lot of what politicians call free, earned media.
As to who’s right legally in this dispute, we’re not sure. We’re not lawyers.
But we hope DeVore keeps it up. What can we say? It makes for interesting headlines.
