Huntington Beach High’s boys’ lacrosse team notched its first league win of the season April 2, outlasting Woodbridge in overtime, 7-6.

Sophomore Stephen Koressel scored the game-winner for Huntington Beach, his second goal of the game to go with an assist. Senior Nate Hesse had three goals and juniors Andy Nemes and Andrew Jackson each added goals.

Hunter Costin had two assists, and fellow juniors Brandon Cyprus and Nathan Birk each added one assist each.

In earlier action, Huntington Beach fell to El Toro, 17-8, on March 31. Jason Perez, Alec Ontiveros, Jason Smith, Aaron Chernus, Costin, Nemes, Jackson and Cyprus all scored goals. Costin led the way with five assists.

SOFTBALL

The big Woodbridge Softball Classic begins Saturday at Bill Barber Memorial Park and Edison, Marina, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach will all be participating.

The first day of the tournament is pool play. Edison (8-3) opens against Orange Lutheran at 8 a.m. Saturday. Marina (10-2), ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, plays North Torrance at the same time.

Fountain Valley (6-5) tangles with host Woodbridge in its opener at 2:45 p.m., and Huntington Beach (4-6) battles Mission Viejo at 5 p.m.

All games are played at Bill Barber Memorial Park, and after the first day, Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions will be determined.

Quarterfinals are set for Monday, with the championship and consolation rounds set for April 18. The Gold division championship is at 7:15 p.m. April 18.

BASEBALL

?Senior Paul Strong’s no-hitter led Marina to a 3-0 win over Esperanza on April 2. The UC Irvine-bound Strong added seven strikeouts for the Vikings (10-2, 4-1 in Sunset League).

?The Ocean View High baseball team advanced to the fifth-place game of the OCNissan.com Select Invitational after edging Mira Costa, 8-7, on Tuesday.

In earlier action, the Seahawks (9-6) topped Valencia, 5-1, in the opening round before falling to Woodbridge, 2-1, in a tournament quarterfinal game.

Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski was happy with the play of his team, which he said really got going after a Golden West League win over first-place Westminster on April 2. Sophomore Alfredo Sepulveda had a three-hit shutout in that game.

“That really helped us out and started us up,” Borowski said. “We really rolled into this tournament. I’m really excited to start up league play again next week.”

Sepulveda also got the win against Mira Costa, improving to 4-2. Aaron Delgado was two for four with a triple and an RBI and senior Andrew Bynum went three for four with two RBIs and a double. Sophomore Blake Walker got his first save of the season.

Bynum was the tough-luck loser against Woodbridge, despite striking out seven.

In the tournament opener, senior David Robert Garay pitched the complete game four-hitter.

Bynum was two for four with a double, and Sean Carpentier had a key pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth.

After they played in the tournament fifth-place game Wednesday, the Seahawks resume league play on April 15 against Segerstrom.

?Edison is up to the No. 2 ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll. The Chargers are playing games in Hawaii this week. They topped Esperanza, 4-2, in a Sunset League game Saturday.

Henry Owens and Tanner Phillips combined to pitch for Edison (10-1, 6-0 in league), with Phillips earning the victory.

Kyle Jones had a triple, and senior catcher Donald Sneed had an insurance home run in the seventh inning for the Chargers, who have won 10 straight.
