John Reuben Mcintosh
Beloved husband, father, friend and mentor to many
passed away at home April 3, 2009.
Born to parents John R. McIntosh and Chlorinda
Wells McIntosh, in Chyenne, Wyoming Feb.10, 1925,
John spent his early years in Omaha, Nebraska where
he established life long friendships and his late teen years
in Wisconsin, where he got his start in the restaurant
business working as a sandwich boy after school. During
summers he worked as a ,shing guide where he developed
his love for the outdoors. He attended University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor and was a Corporal in the United
States MarineCorps.
John and former wife Audrey F. McIntosh (deceased
March 24,2009) started their , rst Snack Shop Restaurant
in Corona del Mar in 1948. As his restaurant success
continued throughout Orange County and the rest of the
country John formed Far West Services, which became
the parent company for all of the restaurant operations
which included Snack Shops, Coco’s, Reuben’s, Reuben
E. Lee’s, Isadoras, Moonrakers, The Plankhouse, The
Mooring, Baxter Street and numerous others.
Newspaper articles and magazines referred to him
as ‘The Canny Scot with the Golden Touch and one
of greatest restaurateurs of an unfranchised chain of
restaurants in the United States.’ He was made honorary
mayor of Corona del Mar and was active in the community
for promoting better business standards.
Known to all as a great outdoorsman, he spent his
summers in Alaska catching record salmon and halibut,
crabbing, clamming, shrimping and sharing with family
and friends his love for the bounty and adventures of the
great Paci, c Northwest.
He will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit
and his keen sense of loyalty to family and friends.
John is survived by wife Kathleen, sons Scott,
John and Patrick, stepchildren Michele and Matthew,
9 Grandchildren and 9 great Grandchildren. Services will
be private.
