COMMUNITY & CLUBS:

Save the date of May 29 for the first Daily Pilot Community and Clubs Hall of Fame luncheon at American Legion Post 291.

The noontime luncheon will be a chance to bring honor and recognition to individual members of service clubs and community groups, to bring public awareness of the contributions of clubs and groups to the community, with the proceeds going to one of my favorite charities, Learning for Life/Exploring, a values and career education program of the Orange County Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Groups eligible to participate are Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Exchange, Soroptimists, Elks, Legion and other community groups in the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach communities. Watch for nomination information and more luncheon information in the coming weeks.

GIRLS STATE DELEGATES SELECTED

The Newport Harbor Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary has selected delegates and alternates to represent their respective schools at the 2009 Girls State Conference at Pitzer College at Claremont University from June 27 to July 3, according to Cynthia Culp, committee chairwoman.

Those selected are Athena Livadas and Sarah Keddington, Corona del Mar High School; Tayler Hobberlin and Danielle Young, Costa Mesa High School; Kim Haycraft, Estancia High School; Razleen Brar and Victoria Tran, Irvine High School; Jennifer Kalmbach, Newport Harbor High School; Kristine Lee and Lemiece Zarka, Northwood High School; Leah Sams, Sage Hill School; Alexandra Scott and Youval Yadlin, Woodbridge High School.

These young women must meet academic requirements as well as be involved in extra curricular school and community activities.

They will be honored at a district luncheon April 25. The conference is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship.

The entire program is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical attempt to teach and inculcate in the youth of America a love of God and country.
