Trabuco Hills Invitational

MISSION VIEJO — Newport Harbor High junior Cecil Whiteside won the discus (180 feet, 1 inch) and the Sailors also had a winning relay team Saturday at Trabuco Hills High.

Benny Ward, Joel Betonte, Evan Walker and Scott Figueroa took first place in the sprint medley relay, which consists of a 200-meter leg, another 200, a 400 and ends with an 800, in 3 minutes, 41.78 seconds.

Whiteside also finished second in the shot put (56-8 1/2 ). He has the second best discus mark in the state, 187-5, six inches behind the top throw, according to dyestatcal.com

Newport Harbor’s Ryan Andrews took fifth in the shot put (52-8), while Brandon Kula was eighth in the discus (153-10). Jake Dawson finished fourth in the 3,200 in 9:31.53 for the Sailors.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Trabuco Hills Invitational

MISSION VIEJO — Melissa Hancock, Siarra Sabri and Erica Pearson each earned third-place finishes in their respective events for Newport Harbor High Saturday at Trabuco Hills High.

Hancock cleared 5-2 in the high jump, Sabri 10-0 in the pole vault and Pearson finished the 3,200 meters in 11:15.54. Lillie Berry was ninth in the 400 in 58.94, a personal record.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings scored seven runs in the first inning to take control and eased to their first-round win in the Beach Pit Classic Saturday.

Senior John Doering went three for five with a double, junior Beau Attyah was two for two and Brian Ford was two for four for CdM (7-5). Sea Kings senior Michael Bloom hit a solo home run in the first inning, this third of the season. Like many of the starters he sat after the first inning with CdM up ahead comfortably.

The Sea Kings will play host to Canyon of Canyon Country Monday at 11 a.m. in a quarterfinal. Other scores from the tournament: Beckman 7, Costa Mesa 0.
