YOUTH SCENE:

For the second year in a row, TeWinkle Intermediate School swept the Coastal Athletic League boys’ soccer championships. The seventh-grade team defeated Corona del Mar, 2-1, and the eighth-grade team beat Ensign, 2-1, Monday at the Costa Mesa Farm Soccer Complex.

Nahum Paz scored the winning goal for the Trojan eighth-graders, breaking a 1-1 tie, with about five minutes left in the game. Ensign had tied the score midway through the second half. Miguel Florentino scored in the first half for the Trojans (9-0).

Jorge Mendoza and Abraham Cortez scored for TeWinkle’s seventh-grade team, which finished 8-0-1. The teams were coached by Stacie Paulus, a TeWinkle English teacher, and Pedro Duarte, a former Estancia High standout.

TeWinkle’s seventh-grade roster included: Jesus Acevedo, Yelko Carmena, Abraham Cortez, Steve Ceja, Gionvanni Felix, Alan Gonzalez, Eric Hanson, Carlos Herrera, Jorge Mendoza, Ivan Morales, Mario Mendez, Oswaldo Moza, Eduardo Perez, Marcos Pineda, Oliver Rios, Arturo Salazar and Omar Torres.

TeWinkle’s eighth-grade roster included: Ben Beck, Alex Duarte, Junior Dominguez, Alex Esquival, Miguel Florentino, Erick Gutierrez, Joey Hanson, Atanasio Hernandez, Cristian Montillo, Anthony Pastrana, Nahum Paz, Diego Perez, Victor Rodriguez, Enrique Salazar, Gustavo “Toro” Venegas, Henry Vazquez and Brad Wilson.

BASKETBALL

Sailors do it

The Newport-Mesa Sailors, an eighth-grade All-Net boys’ basketball team, rallied to win the National Junior Basketball National Tournament last weekend and ended the season 16-6.

The Sailors overcame a 13-point deficit and earned a 62-55 victory against Anaheim Hills. Blake Grable hit two big three-pointers in the second quarter to chip at the lead. John Harzan and Blake Motal led a strong run in the final minutes of the first half to help the Sailors pull even, 23-23.

The third quarter was a frenzy of lead changes with each team trying to impose its will. The Sailors’ full-court pressure and multiple steals by Derek Kula held off the four three-pointers made by the Red Raiders and kept the game close.

The Sailors dominated the final quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders, 21-12. Drew Olson (eight points), Harzan (eight points) and Robbie Rettig (three assists and three steals) contributed to help the Sailors win the game.

In pool play, the Sailors defeated Lindsay McDermont, 49-44, Jurupa, 48-25, and El Toro, 55-43. In the semifinals, Newport-Mesa took care of Capo-Dana, 51-35.

The Newport-Mesa roster consisted of Meckler, Connor Kelly, Nick Hanna, Diego Morales, Harzan, Olson, Grable, Kula, Rettig and Motal. Marc Kelly, Scott Stucki and Dan Grable coached the team.

Longhorns win too

The Newport-Mesa Longhorns, a sixth-grade All-Net boys’ basketball team, won the NJB All-Net National championship this past weekend.

The Longhorns included: Harrison Carter, Jake Haar, Ben Humphreys, Max Stanley, Matthew Marchiorlatti, Austin Ridge, Keisean South and Landon Knight. Jon Haar, Berry Carter and Kevin Knight coached the team.

BASEBALL

Dodgers come alive

With only nine of their 12 players present, the Costa Mesa American Little League Major Division Dodgers came up with their first win of the season in a big way.

The Dodgers started the season with an 0-6 record up until Saturday when their bats woke up. They rallied for nine runs against the Angels. Starting pitcher Evan Larsen threw three shutout innings with seven strikeouts and was relieved by Daniel Morales, who held the Angels to one run, while striking out six in three innings. Mikey “The Bandit” Ischinger stole the Dodgers’ offensive show by going four for four with three singles, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Daniel Morales went three for three with a single, a double, a triple and a walk along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Evan Larsen went one for three with a single, a walk and two RBIs. Cole Chambers and Chris Richardson each went two for three with a single and a double. CJ Schwarz, Trevor Cohen and Kieth Marshall each had a single, while Romar Ortiz scored a run.
