Police ticket drivers at Costa Mesa checkpoint

A DUI checkpoint on 19th Street Tuesday night netted more than two dozen tickets but no DUI arrests, police said Wednesday.

About 900 cars passed through the checkpoint, stationed at 19th Street and Pomona Avenue, Tuesday night with 236 drivers being screened by police. Officers stopped 21 drivers for DUI investigations, but arrested none.

Three drivers were cited for driving without their license, another was cited for not having a valid license. Eight drivers were cited for not being licensed drivers. One driver was given a ticket for having an open container in the car while a dozen other people were cited for other kinds of vehicle code violations. In total, three cars were impounded.

Costa Mesa police will conduct another DUI checkpoint April 4.

Funding for the checkpoints is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
