Driver gets 3 years
A 23-year-old Pasadena man was convicted Wednesday on charges related to trying to run over six people with his car outside a Newport Beach bar during Labor Day weekend after he was jilted in a doughnut shop.
Bryan Adam Curiel pleaded guilty to one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon, a felony count of driving under the influence causing bodily injury and a felony count of driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit of .08 while causing bodily injury. He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay restitution.
After Curiel and a friend left a bar near the pier Aug. 31 they went to a doughnut shop and he tried to flirt with three women there, but they told him they were not interested and left, prosecutors said. Curiel followed and kept flirting as they repeatedly gave him the brush-off. The women were later joined by two men and another woman. Curiel shouted profanities at them and left with his friend, according to prosecutors.
About 10 minutes later, Curiel, who was drunk, tried to run them over, prosecutors said. He drove through the parking lot between 50 and 65 mph as he veered toward the group. They scrambled to avoid him, but one victim failed to get out of the way and was struck in the foot. Curiel careened over the sidewalk and slammed into several concrete benches, prosecutors said.
