It’s coming close to that time of year again, when local elementary school children team up to compete in the biggest soccer tournament around.
It’s the Daily Pilot Cup, which will be in its 10th year, May 26-31. The tournament for grades third through sixth, featured 30 Newport-Mesa schools and more than 2,500 boys and girls vying for a championship in different divisions.
Last year, there were a record amount of teams, as 164 competed in the tournament.
Children interested in competing should expect sign-up sheets coming soon. Most schools charge $5, which covers the cost of the T-shirt.
Last year, the Rea boys’ fifth- and sixth-grade team won its seventh championship, allowing only one goal in the tournament.
