HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Ocean View High boys’ basketball team has already won CIF.
Now, the Seahawks have taken their first step on the road to an even bigger prize.
Ocean View beat Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, 67-50, at home on Tuesday night in the opening round of the CIF State Division III Southern California regional.
Senior Mason Jones led the charge with 13 points, followed by sophomore Billy Keller with 12. Juniors Avery Johnson and Ryan Okwudibonye scored 10 each.
The Seahawks (25-7) will host Canyon of Anaheim in a Southern Califorina regional semifinal Thursday at 7 p.m. A win there would take Ocean View to the Southern California Division III championship game, to be played Saturday at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.
In another game Tuesday night, the Edison High girls’ basketball team won on the road in the CIF State Division II Southern California regional tournament.
No. 5-seeded Edison beat No. 4 West HIlls of Santee, 53-41.
The fourth quarter was the big difference, as the Chargers outscored West Hills, 20-4. Bonnie Samuelson led the way with a team-high 20, followed by senior Kelly Peterson with 13 and Christina Marquette with 10.
Edison, which fell in the CIF title game to Brea Olinda on Saturday, will face top-seeded Mater Dei in a Southern California regional semfinal Thursday at 7 at Mater Dei.
The winner of that game will go to the regional final Saturday at 2 p.m. at UCLA.
