Below is a team-by-team look at how area girls’ and boys’ teams fared last week.
Girls’ basketball
Edison: Prior to defeating Fountain Valley on Tuesday, the Chargers had opened league play by clobbering Esperanza, 52-22. Michelle Yamasaki scored 12 points, Bonnie Samuelson had 11 points, Stormie Caldin had nine points, Mary Madden and Kelly Peterson each had eight points and Christina Marquette finished with five points to complete a balanced Edison scoring attack.
Fountain Valley: The Barons traveled to Ocean View on Saturday for a nonleague game and came away with a 53-44 victory over the Seahawks. Helena Robel and LaRee Reeves scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead Fountain Valley.
Huntington Beach: The Oilers suffered a 70-56 loss to defending Sea View League champion Foothill on the opening night of league play Jan. 8. Noelani Viloria led all scorers with 18 points and Sarah Boggeln scored eight points with six rebounds. Foothill is ranked third in Orange County and in the top 50 national rankings at ESPN, Huntington Coach Russell McClurg said.
“We knew they were going to be tough and we had to play a near flawless game to beat them,” McClurg said.
Behind a game-high 21 points from freshman Maya Kennedy and a 13-point, eight-rebound effort by Viloria on Saturday, the Oilers rebounded from the loss to Foothill to rout Beckman, 82-17, in the Adidas Challenge at Magnolia High.
Marina: “It was a solid week for us last week,” Vikings Coach Butch Fredlow about his squad, which posted a 50-47 overtime nonleague win over El Toro and got a victory on the opening night of Sunset League play on Jan. 8 by beating Fountain Valley, 59-34.
Marina defeated El Toro despite losing top scorer Rita Sitivi, who had fouled out late in the fourth quarter.
“Offensively, we were able to be successful, even though Fountain Valley had come out in a box-and-one defense in attempt to slow down Rita (Sitivi),” Fredlow said. “While Rita was held to nine points, she did things to make her teammates be more successful. We were satisfied with our win on Thursday, a good way to start league, but the players and coaches believe that we can and should play better.”
Although Sitivi was held below her scoring average, Gracie Boelsems scored a game-high 15 points and Alyssa Kinoshita had 11 points for the Vikings. Kimi Kamada scored nine points to lead the Fountain Valley offense.
Ocean View: In Saturday’s 53-44 nonleague loss to Fountain Valley, Sareen Ohanian scored 16 points to lead all scorers.
Boys’ Basketball
Edison: The Chargers dropped a 49-45 game to host Esperanza in a Sunset League opener Friday. Kyle Boswell had 17 points and Dylan Garrity added 11 for Edison.
“They outplayed, out-hustled and out-competed us,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “Hopefully we learned a lesson from that game.”
Fountain Valley: The Barons fell in their Sunset League opener at home to Marina, 61-54. Nam Pham scored 16 points and Saba Sheida had 10 points for Fountain Valley.
On Saturday, the Barons dropped a 76-46 nonleague game to visiting Nogales. Robbie Daquila’s 10 points topped the Barons’ scoring.
Huntington Beach: The Oilers used an 18-0 run in the third quarter to take control of their Sea View League opener against Foothill and went on to claim a 66-56 victory Friday.
Zach Kimber led all scorers with 21 points and also collected eight rebounds. David Swartz had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Nick Neser scored 16 points.
“In the second half, it was all about us getting back to the basics,” Huntington Coach Fabian Luna said. “We lead with our defense and we really stepped up in that regard in the third quarter.”
Marina: The Vikings began Sunset League play with a 61-54 road win at Fountain Valley. Garrett James led all scorers with 24 points and was 13 of 14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter alone.
Brendan Holmes scored 12 points, J.J. James had nine points on the strength of three three-point baskets and Jacob Tricarico had seven points with 13 rebounds. Steven Murray also knocked down a key three-point shot in the fourth quarter for the Vikings.
“We played the first half at Fountain Valley’s pace, shot poorly and were down 21-18 at half,” Marina Coach Roger Holmes said.
“We made a few adjustments at half and played our way in the second half, outscoring them, 43-33, to secure the win. We will need contributions from everyone to stay successful in league. It was a bit of a struggle, but any road win in the Sunset League is great.”
Ocean View: The Seahawks opened defense of their Golden West League championship Friday by outscoring host Segerstrom by 13 points in the second half to come away with a 59-49 victory.
Mason Jones hit four three-point shots en route to a game-high 22 points. Anthony Brown also was in double figures with 16 points and Billy Keller led the defensive charge of the Seahawks.
“Coach Adrian Gomez has his Jaguars believing and playing at a level worthy of major competition for the top spot in this league,” Ocean View co-coach Jimmy Harris said.
“I thought we did a nice job defensively on the ball and on their best three-point shooters (Aaron Delgado, Andrew Shigimasa), especially in the second half. Avery Johnson was dogged all night by their best defenders, so it was important for guys like Mason Jones, Anthony Brown and Ryan Okwudibonye to step up and play effectively.
“This game should prove to our team that we are going to get every team’s max effort and best game. Consistent effort and focus will be necessary to win this league.”
