A few hours after a Newport Beach woman and her two sons recently broke into the home of her ex-husband’s wife and stole a fur coat and other valuables she called police to tell them she had “done something really bad,” police said Wednesday.

Diane Breedlove, 53, was arrested New Year’s Day along with her two sons, Andrew Breedlove, 18, and Justin Breedlove, 21, after a housekeeper reported to police that the three were stealing things from a home in the 300 block of Seaward Road earlier that day.

According to police, Tracy Breedlove, who owns the home and was out of town, got a call from her housekeeper who told her that Diane, her husband Jim’s ex-wife, and two sons (Tracy’s stepsons) were taking things from the home. The three told the housekeeper they were claiming property for Jim, Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

The group took a TV, a KitchenAid mixer, a fur coat, women’s clothes and fine leather belts altogether worth just less than $7,000, Sailor said.

It appeared one of the three had cut through a screen in the back of the home and unlocked a sliding glass door to get in, Sailor said, adding Diane Breedlove and her two sons drove off after they were confronted.

But three hours later, Diane Breedlove called police and confessed she and her son had made a big mistake and “done something really bad,” Sailor said. She agreed that all three of them would meet police back at Tracy’s home.

Once they arrived, police arrested all three on suspicion of residential burglary. They were booked in Newport Beach jail and released that same night on $50,000 bail each, Sailor said. All three are due in court Feb. 17, Sailor said.
