Edison faces first real test of ’08

The local prep football scene offers up a few interesting matchups this week. First, tonight offers a nonleague game between neighboring rival schools Marina and Westminster. On Friday, two games — Edison-Dana Hills and Ocean View-University — feature unbeaten teams looking to keep their records perfect.

Marina (0-1) vs. Westminster (0-1) at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.: Marina will try to rebound from a turnover-plagued opener when it meets up with a Westminster squad that began the season with high expectations.

Marina couldn’t overcome five turnovers last week against Capistrano Valley, yet almost rallied against the Cougars before suffering an eventual, 23-14, loss. Westminster began the season ranked second in the Southern Division but lost, 42-28, on the road Friday to the division’s third-ranked team, Garden Grove. the loss.

Dana Hills (2-0) vs. Edison (2-0) at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m.: Edison begins a tough, three-game nonleague stretch against a Dana Hills team that, like the Chargers, has rolled to two big victories to start the season.

The Dolphins are coming off a 56-21 thumping of El Toro, a game in which Duke-bound quarterback Sean Schroeder ripped the El Toro secondary for four touchdowns.

“They are really playing well right now and lighting it up on offense,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “They have kids with a lot of varsity experience and right now, they are playing with a lot of confidence. We will need to step it up for this game, but I think we are ready for the challenge.”

Villa Park (0-1) vs. Huntington Beach (0-1) at Newport Harbor High, 7 p.m.: Huntington Beach will break out its new home uniforms for its first “home” game of the season in Newport Beach.

The Oilers couldn’t complete a late rally last week against JSerra as a last-minute interception in the end zone sealed a 24-17 defeat.

Fountain Valley (1-1) vs. Pacifica (1-0) at Bolsa Grande High, 7 p.m.: Fountain Valley is trying to rebound from last week’s 29-13 loss to Tesoro in a game where the Barons lost starting quarterback Steven Santana to a dislocated right shoulder.

Kyle Middlebrooks scored on two big plays for Fountain Valley

University (2-0) at Ocean View (1-0), 7 p.m.: A successful two-point conversion run late in the fourth quarter lifted Ocean View to a season-opening 15-14 victory over host Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana on Sept. 11.

Now, the Seahawks open their home slate against University, which is ranked third in the Southern Division.

Like Ocean View, run-oriented University is coming off a pair of close victories, 20-18, against Northwood and 14-13 against Irvine.

“It looks like they have good team speed and good sized kids,” Ocean View Coach Harold Eggers said of the Trojans.

An fumble recovery by Kenny Tarpley on the second play from scrimmage set up a nine-yard touchdown run by Kyle Walker in Ocean View’s one-point win over Calvary Chapel. In the fourth quarter, Walker capped a late Ocean View drive with a six-yard run and Tarpley bullied his way into the end zone on a two-point conversion run to provide the Seahawks with the winning points with 5:20 to play.

Los Amigos (0-1) vs. Loara (1-0) at Glover Stadium, 7 p.m.: Los Amigos dropped its season opener, losing, 58-14, to Norwalk. Ricky Vu rushed for 219 yards and scored both touchdowns for the Lobos.

Saturday

Brethren Christian (0-1) vs. Calvary Chapel/Downey (0-1) at Downey High, 7 p.m.: Brethren Christian is coming off a season-opening 46-6 home loss to Riverside Christian. Brad Hess and Matthew Bodziak hooked up on a 10-yard scoring pass for the Warriors.
