SAN DIEGO — Vanguard senior Rebecca Sopp defended her individual title in the open division race, finishing in 19 minutes at Balboa Park.

Chelsea Van Cott and Megan Williams finished eighth and ninth, respectively, Van Cott in 19:35 and Williams in 19:40 to help the Lions finish third out of 10 teams.

The Vanguard men’s team finished 11th with Fistum Tesfa leading the way. He finished 15th in 25:29, a Vanguard freshman record.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine finished third among four teams and redshirt freshman Alex Hauser earned all-tournament honors Saturday night.

The Anteaters (4-6) were swept by Loyola Marymount to end the tournament, as the Lions won, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19. Hauser had 20 kills and 11 block assists in three matches.

Sophomore Kari Pestolesi led UCI with 13 kills and added 10 digs.

Earlier in the tournament Saturday: The Anteaters halted a three-match losing streak with a 25-20, 25-16, 26-24 triumph over Pitt.

Pestolesi had a match-high 11 kills and added 14 digs to lead the Anteaters, who also received seven kills and five block assists from senior Shannan Homan, who hit .429.

GLENDORA — Outside hitters Jessica Brown and Rachel Freeno each recorded 12 kills in the Pirates’ 25-14, 25-9, 25-20 nonconference road victory Saturday.

Setter Emily Lyon had 32 assists for OCC (3-0).

The Pirates play host to Southwestern Wednesday at 6 p.m.

MOBILE, Ala. — Karri Currier had two assists for the Lions Saturday at the University of Mobile Soccer Classic.

Gabriele Valles and Ivana Mendez each scored a goal for Vanguard (4-0-1).

MOBILE, Ala. — The Lions dropped to 1-2-1 after their loss Saturday at the University of Mobile Soccer Classic.

Trevor Herrera had six saves. Auburn Montgomery scored in the 61st minute.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCLA 10, UC Irvine 4

IRVINE — James Frank led the No. 7-ranked Anteaters with two goals in their season-opener against the fourth-ranked Bruins Saturday.

Brandon Johnson and Jesse Hatch added one goal each for UCI, while goalie Matt Johnson had five saves in goal in the first half and Erik Evered made three stops in the second half.
