Near upset good enough for second place

Brad Keenan and John Hyden nearly did it.

Keenan — a former standout at Fountain Valley High — and Hyden were on the verge of handing Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers their first loss since the Summer Games in Beijing on Sunday, but the Assn. of Professional Volleyball’s top men’s team rallied to escape with a 16-21, 21-19, 20-18 victory before a standing-room-only crowd at the Crocs Cup Shootout in Santa Barbara.

Keenan/Hyden were the tournament’s No. 6 seed. They matched their best finish of the tour with the second-place showing.
