Topy Cup

TANAGURA, Japan — The UC Irvine men’s golf team is tied for fifth place after the first day of the 26th annual Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club in Japan.

The Anteaters are tied with Senshu University with 18-hole scores of 296. Three-time defending champion Tohoku Fukushi University and Lamar University are tied for first at 285, Nihon University is third at 290 and New Mexico is fourth at 292 in the 10-team field.

Shinpei Iijima of Meiji University and Lamar’s Leroux Ferreira are the individual leaders after shooting 3-under rounds of 69.

UCI freshman Michael Im is in 11th place after an even-par 72. Senior Sean Shahi and junior John Chin are tied for 17th place at 73, sophomore Bryan Harris is 42nd at 78 and senior Cean Hayashi Geronimo is 51st at 81. The tournament continues with 18 holes each today and Thursday.

GLENDALE — Briant Rodelo scored a goal and had an assist to help the Pirates improve to 3-1 in nonconference play Tuesday night.

Toshi Fujimura, Luis Parra and John Shinjo also scored for OCC, which received assists from Scotty Locken and Mitch Williams.
