Green roofs aren’t just a growing phenomenon on Costa Mesa’s Westside.

This year, one of the eight playhouses in HomeAid Orange County’s 17th annual Project Playhouse fundraiser at Fashion Island has a roof with vegetation on top — courtesy of W Custom Homes, which constructed its mini-house out of sustainable materials and even included fruit trees out front.

The display — which raises funds for HomeAid, a nonprofit that provides housing for homeless families and individuals — also features a hockey-themed house from the Anaheim Ducks, a Caribbean surf shack and a replica of a USC frat house.
