Rampage crash didn’t cause miscarriage, D.A. says

Though Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial artist Quinton “Rampage” Jackson faces two felonies among several charges for allegedly fleeing police in his truck last month, prosecutors are saying definitively that he did not cause a woman’s miscarriage after hitting her car.

Police claim that on July 15, Jackson drove his lifted Ford F-350 pick-up truck down the middle lane of the southbound 55 Freeway near the 19th Street intersection in Costa Mesa and hit two cars along the way, one driven by 38-year-old Holli Griggs of Huntington Beach.

Griggs, who was more than 16 weeks pregnant, suffered a miscarriage weeks later.

Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney, put it plainly: “The evidence showed that [the crash] was in no way related to the loss of the fetus. There is no evidence that that was the case.”

In the aftermath, Griggs hired an attorney, Darren Aitken of Aitken Aitken & Cohn law firm, to represent her. Her fiance, Bill Krebs, said an ultrasound taken days before the crash showed a perfectly healthy fetus in the womb, and it significantly changed after the crash.

But prosecutors concluded the facts did not support Krebs’ claims.

Prosecutors reviewed all medical records related to the case, including a private autopsy of the fetus performed by Kaiser Permanente Hospital doctors, before they filed charges.

Griggs has not filed a civil suit against Jackson.

Calls to attorneys for Jackson and Griggs were not returned Tuesday.

The day after Jackson was arrested, he was sent to the hospital for a mental evaluation by Irvine police after friends flagged them down in front of Jackson’s home.

Jackson faces up to three years on charges he recklessly fled police, drove on the wrong side of the street and hit three vehicles with his truck, then fled the scene. He is scheduled to be arraigned today.
