WET ‘N’ WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG:

The SIMA Surfing America U.S. Surf Championships ended after a week of action-packed surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Hawaiian ripper Keanu Asing led the way with two big wins, one in the boys 16 and under division, defeating Newport Beach’s Taylor Thorne and Andrew Doheny. In the boys 18 and under, Asing nailed another win over West Coaster Connor Coffin and East Coast standout Fisher Heverly.

The boys 14 and under action saw San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino defend last year’s win as he consistently tore up, hear after heat, to the finals, to win again. In the 12 and under boys, Hawaii’s Ian Gentil was busting the big moves and got the victory, but Huntington Beach’s Kanoa Igarashi threw some solid turns to finish in second place.

In the gals 18 and under, pier local and U.S. team shredder Courtney Conlogue had another huge final to win it. Hawaiian Nage Melamed took the girls 16 and under title, and Florida’s Nikki Viesins won gals 14 and under. In the mini shredders division girls 12 and under, Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston Webb blew up with a nine plus score to win. Newport Beach’s Miah Collins finished second.

In men’s, North Carolina’s Cody Leutgens found a killer right and tore it apart for the win. Chris McDonald rolled to second while in third was Surf City’s Chad Masri, who tore a left apart, three big slashes, throwing lots of water in a hard-fought battle.

Master’s was taken by San Diego’s Stephen Moore and Seniors was won by Palos Verdes’ Bill MacLeod, who came back at the end to win it. In legends, Carlsbad’s Johnny Silver slashed a left, for the close win over, yep the Figster, who bashed a couple turns on a right set, with Pat Schlick rounding out the top three spots for the West Coasters.

Mia Melamed made it three straight titles in a row with her win in women’s short board. Huntington’s Mary Setterholm finished in fourth. USA coach Joey Buran picked his new team after the contest.

In the 18 and under some of the members were Andrew Doheny, Fisher Heverly, Santa Cruz’s Nat Young, Huntington Beach’s Kyle McGeary, Hawaii’s Nathan Carvalho and up north’s Dane Zaun. For the 16 and under’s Kolohe Andino, Connor Coffin, Taylor Thorne, Capo’s Luke Davis and Florida’s Evan Geiselman were named on the team. In the gals repeat, Conlogue, Newport’s Kaleigh Gilchrist and Hawaii’s Nage Melamed were the new additions.

The women’s W.C.T. starts in France at Hossegor for the Rip Curl Mademoiselle Pro this week. Peru’s Sophia Mulanovich is leading the ratings, world champ Stephanie Gilmore is second, Samantha Cornish third, Amee Donohoe fourth and repeat world champ Layne Beachley fifth.

That’s it for now. Fig over and out; see ya!
