Economic development director returns to work

Huntington Beach’s director of economic development is back at work after he was put on leave by the city for a personnel review, officials said Monday.

Economic Development Director Stanley Smalewitz “voluntarily participated in a personnel review conducted by Human Resources,” city spokeswoman Laurie Payne wrote in a news release. Smalewitz resumed his duties Tuesday morning.

Smalewitz was placed on administrative leave by the city Aug. 7, but officials said the reason for the investigation was confidential. The details of the now-finished review remain “not available to the public,” according to Payne. It was the only such administrative leave in the last two years, officials said.
