Sprucing up a special spot

Laguna Beach’s Garden of Peace and Love, on the ocean side of Mountain Road, got a much-needed sprucing up on Aug. 9. The cleanup was organized by Laguna Muse founder Glen Kasper.

Michele Martinay started the garden as a memorial to those who have died from HIV/AIDS, and has tended the garden for 18 years. Martinay is now living in a hospice and can no longer maintain the garden, according to activist Fred Karger.

Jon Madison, owner of Madison Square Gardens and Cafe, donated flowers, plants, bushes and trees and volunteers worked for hours to restore the garden to its original beauty.

Muse, a Laguna Beach-based gay publication, is raising money to hire a gardener to take care of the spot. To donate or help out, visit www.lagunamuse.com.
