Former CdM standout triumphs on the beach

Kasey Kipp, a former Corona del Mar High standout now preparing for her sophomore season at UC Santa Barbara, was a member of the women’s open division champion at the Charlie Saikley volleyball tournament, also known as the Manhattan Beach six-man tournament, completed Sunday near the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Kipp, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker for the Gauchos, was part of the team for which only two players from the same school can compete.

Kipp led UCSB with 108 block assists and compiled 117 total blocks and 143 kills as a freshman last season.

She helped CdM win the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship in 2004 and was a two-time first-team All-Pacific Coast League performer with the Sea Kings.

UCSB opens its season in the Cal tournament Aug. 30 against St. John’s.
