Performing music for a purpose

Three local musicians have been “partying with a purpose” for years, but this summer the partying has been going on at Aliso Creek Inn’s Canyon Lodge.

The last “Soulfood Session” of the summer with Robert Cassard, Paul Manfrini and Bara Waters will be from 7 to 10 p.m. this Thursday.

After each Soulfood Session, the band surprises a local charity by donating a portion of their earnings.

“It’s more like a party because it crosses the bridge from a concert to music, fun and food,” said Cassard.

Two years ago, Cassard and Waters played with Manfrini for the first time, and the trio have been hosting their “parties with a purpose” since.

Originally, Cassard and Waters moved from Michigan to Los Angeles to pursue careers as music writing partners and producers.

After a successful run in show business, they decided to make a change and move to Laguna Beach in 1994 where they continued to pursue their love for music.

On their journey, they befriended percussionist Vic Peterson, who has played with the late Mambo legend Tito Puente, and the world-renowned Blue Man Group.

As a special guest, Peterson will be joining the trio for their last performance of the summer.

“Vic is a real showman and is so excited to play in an intimate setting,” said Cassard. “He usually plays to crowds of 5,000 or more, so this is a real treat for both him and the audience.”

For this event, the proceeds will go to Rosalind Russell, who is commonly referred to as the “goat lady” because of her efforts to provide farm animals to destitute people in areas like Nepal.

“We really want to help the ‘goat lady,’ and we know that from our previous donations to her organization a little goes a long way.”

Russell buys goats for families in war-torn areas to help them live a sustainable lifestyle.

Suggested donation for the Soulfood event is $20 per person, plus food and beverage. Call (949)499-2663 for reservations.
