YOUTH SCENE:

MORAGA — The Orange County Water Polo Club’s Under-14 boys team won its age-group crown at the U.S. Club Water Polo Championships, completed June 29 at the Soda Aquatic Center..

Newport Beach residents Will Castelblanco, Nicholas Hegyi, Daniel Stevens, Jon Walters, James Walters and Ben Zepfel competed on the team. The OCWPC squad defeated SoCal, 12-9, in the title match, and also topped Commerce, 680 Drivers, LA Water Polo, Santa Barbara and Lamorinda club teams.

The tournament was also held at aquatics facilities in Walnut Creek, Lafayette and Orinda.

For the OCWPC 14-and-under boys, this weekend’s USA Water Polo Junior Olympics are next. The tournament begins Saturday at various pools throughout Orange County.

OCWPC, based at JSerra High, begins Saturday at 8:45 a.m. against Uni Pacific at Mission Viejo High.

SOFTBALL TEAM THIRD

The Pacific Coast Girls Fastpitch Softball 10-under All-Stars from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa placed third at the ASA Junior Olympic State Championship in Lancaster.

The PCGFS Rebels lost, 8-1, to Hacienda Heights in the tournament featuring the top three teams from each of the six districts in Southern California.

Riley Gerdau, Kat Perry, Courtney Leyba, Paige Migliori, Sydney McKeown, Jordan Blanchfield and Catrell Robertson contributed to the Rebels success.

The Rebels opened the tournament with wins over Upland, San Clemente and San Dieguito.

MCWHERTOR THROWS NO-HITTER

TK McWhertor pitched a no-hitter, helping the Newport Harbor Bronco 12-year-old All-Stars beat Garden Grove, 8-0, at Canyon Field July 15.

Blake Pender hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Newport Harbor wasn’t as fortunate in the following game.

Newport Harbor lost to Dana Point in an elimination game, 7-4. Dana Point advances to the regional tournament in Los Alamitos.

Newport Harbor’s Garrett Prather blasted a two-run home to left-center field that tied the game at 4-4.
