HAGESTAD TIED FOR 5TH

SAN DIEGO — Stewart Hagestad, a Newport Beach resident, is tied for fifth and is five strokes off the lead with one round remaining in the boys’ 15-17 division of the Junior World Championships at the Torrey Pines South Course.

Hagestad, who was tied for 14th after the second round Wednesday, shot an even-par 72 for the second straight day. He is tied with three others at four-over 220.

Hagestad bogeyed four holes Thursday, yet also had two birdies and an eagle.

MOORHEAD FINISHES 38TH

SANTA MARGARITA — Michael Moorhead, a Newport Beach resident finished 38th in the American Junior Golf Assn. CORE Realty Holdings Junior Open Thursday at Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

Moorhead shot a five-over-par 77 in his final round, 75 Wednesday and 77 in the first round to finish at 13-over 229.

The tournament’s division consisted of 57 boys, ages 12-18.

Michael Yiu of Laguna Hills won the boys’ division by four strokes with a tournament total of nine-under 207.

MCNAIR PASSES AWAY

Former UC Irvine men’s track and field head coach Kevin McNair passed away July 10.

McNair, 59, guided the Anteater program from 1979-84, leading UCI to three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championships (1981, 1982 and 1983). Seventeen of his student-athletes won PCAA individual titles during his tenure. McNair was named PCAA Coach of the Year in 1981.

He is survived by his children, Mike and Patricia, and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.
