BALBOA BAY CLUB JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

DAMION, LOCALS ADVANCE

NEWPORT BEACH — Chris Damion, who will be a senior at Corona del Mar High, upset fourth-seeded Mikey Zablan of Irvine, 6-4, 6-1, in a boys’ 18 singles quarterfinal match of the 19th annual Balboa Bay Club Junior Tournament Wednesday.

Damion will face Ashton Kalhorn of Colorado Springs, Colo. in a semifinal today at 2 p.m. at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club, the host site for the tournament.

In boys’ 16 singles, No. 2-seeded Shane Korber, an incoming sophomore at CdM, defeated Jamie Soliz of Santa Ana, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Korber will take on Irvine’s Stefan Menichella today at 2 p.m. in a semifinal. The final is Friday at 11 a.m.

Damion and Ryan Peyton, a CdM junior-to-be, advanced by default to the boys’ 18 doubles semifinals. The second-seeded duo will face Kalhorn and Colton Pate of Henderson, Nev. today at 3:30 p.m. In the other semifinal, Parker Rhodes and his partner Chad Sigler of Irvine play against Revel Tedjo and Gao Yu Zhang also at 3:30 p.m. Rhodes is formerly of CdM and now living in Ogden, Utah.

Tedjo and Zhang defeated the top-seeded duo of Ely Zaidler, an incoming senior for Estancia, and Andrew Turner of Irvine, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

In boys’ 16 doubles, Korber and his partner Gavin Krogius of San Juan Capistrano will play in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m. against the top-seeded tandem of Justin Sampson of Irvine and Trevor Zaret of Santa Ana.

In boys’ 12 doubles, Andrew Nguyen of Newport Beach and his partner Alex Tran of Irvine will play against the No. 2-seeded duo of Matthew Greenberg of San Clemente and Garret Vincent of Laguna Niguel in a semfinal match today at 3:30 p.m.

Corona del Mar High’s Melissa Matsuoka and Linsday Zotovich took out the top-seeded team of Natalie and Emily McNall of Altadena, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, in a girls’ 18 doubles quarterfinal match. Matsuoka and Zotovich will play against Chung Wing Sher and Pui Wing Sher in a semifinal today at 2 p.m.

The Shers defeated Newport Beach’s Kelli Feeley and Karen Ishii, 6-1, 6-2.

In the other semifinal, Ellie Edles and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing play against Jennifer Cornea of Anaheim and Megan Heneghan of Tustin today at 3:30 p.m. Edles and Man-Son-Hing beat the No. 2-seeded duo of Danielle Kaiden and Paige Polizois of CdM High, 6-4, 7-5.

In girls’ 14 doubles, Samantha Stalder of Costa Mesa and Brooke Briseno of Mission Viejo are in today’s semfinals at 3:30 p.m., taking on the No. 2-seeded duo of Brittanie Eraso and Sara Zargham.
