Two Huntington Beach Dwyer Middle School students led their team to a silver medal and top American honors in the Junior Olympic Volleyball Indoor Championships for the 13-Under Boys division held in Sandy, Utah, played July 2-5, 2008.
Matthew Butler (setter) and Davis Tominaga (middle blocker) lead their Highline 13Black (Long Beach, Calif.) team to a 21-25, 25-20, and 15-11 win over Gigantes Carolina-13 (Carolina, Puerto Rico) in the quarterfinals and then defeated the number 1 seed and defending champions Torrimar 13 (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) 21-25, 25-21, and 15-10 in the semifinals.
The gold medal match was won by Pitirres 13 Under (San Juan, Puerto Rico) 16-25 and 20-25. Teams from Puerto Rico filled five of the top six spots in the final 13 Club standings. This was only the 8th time since 1981 that an American team has received a gold and/or silver medal in this age bracket.
