Slammers capture three Far West titles

To say that the Slammers Futbol Club had a great weekend in Hawaii would be an understatement.

The Newport Beach-based soccer club acutally had, “an astonishing weekend,” said Walid Khoury, the Slammers director of coaching.

The Slammers had three girls’ teams win titles at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Championships Sunday. The teams also earned a spot in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-27 at Burns Park Soccer Complex in Little Rock, Ark.

“It was an amazing run for us in the semifinals and finals, and the whole region was like, ‘Wow,’ ” Khoury said. “I don’t think that run could ever be repeated.”

Khoury was referring to four girls’ teams in the finals and a boys’ team in the semifinals at the Region IV Championships, also known as the Far West Regionals.

The Slammers girls’ under-15 team, which included Corona del Mar High players Tessa Andujar, Jordan Dillion, Scarlett Fallon and Lindsey Luke, defeated Real So Cal, 4-1, for the Far West Regional title. Andujar scored two goals.

The Slammers girls’ under-17 team defeated Eagles FC, 1-0, in the title game. And, the Slammers girls’ under-19, which included Newport Beach residents Jackie Zinke and Taylor Fallon, beat FC Portland, 3-0.

The Slammers lost in the girls’ under-18 final, 2-1, in overtime to Colorado Rush Nike. Camille Levin and Taylor Jones, both Newport Beach residents were on that team.

The Slammers boys’ under-16 reached the semifinals. That team included: Ben Capaldi (Sage Hill), Brian Ford (Corona del Mar High), Kevin Kiser (Costa Mesa resident), Jay Levin (Newport Beach resident), Chase Nugent (Newport Harbor) and Reed Williams(CdM).

Gillian Hogan and Elizabeth Eddy, who both play for Newport Harbor, helped the So Cal Blues win the girls’ under-16 title.
